“The 18lb line on this reel is surprisingly tough, but because it’s a thicker monofilament, it can develop a ‘memory’ if left on the spool for too long without use. To keep your casting smooth and avoid ‘birds-nests,’ soak the spool in lukewarm water for 10 minutes before your first trip of the season. This softens the line and helps it fly off the spool without coiling, giving you those extra few yards of distance!”

Not for sea fishing! In saltwater, you often encounter sharp rocks, barnacles, and weed. The 18lb line provides a vital safety margin that prevents you from losing your gear (and fish) to the environment.

Can I use this for casting heavy 6oz leads?

While the 5000 can handle light beach work, for consistent power casting with 5oz or 6oz leads on open beaches, we recommend stepping up to the Sphinx 6000 or 7000 models which have larger spools for better line release.

How do I maintain the drag system?
