In the pursuit of wary, pressured carp, line concealment is often the final piece of the puzzle. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that even the most perfect rig can be ruined if a fish bumps into your mainline on its way to the bait. The Korda Intelligent Backleads are designed to pin your line flush to the lake bed, ensuring that the area around your rig remains a “stealth zone.”
What makes these backleads “intelligent” is their versatility. Unlike standard backleads that can become a liability in weedy conditions, these feature a specialized clip system that can be set to stay on the line or break away if they become snagged. This ensures that you can fish with total confidence, knowing your line is hidden without risking the loss of a fish due to a stuck lead.
Total Line Concealment: By pinning the mainline down between the rod tip and the rig, you eliminate the risk of “line liners”—where fish spook after swimming into your line.
Super-Slick Clip: The attachment is made from an ultra-smooth plastic compound. This allows the backlead to glide effortlessly down the line after you cast, ensuring it settles exactly where you want it without dragging your rig out of position.
Adjustable Safety Release: The clip is designed so it can be locked for standard use or set to “eject” the lead if it encounters thick weed or snags during the fight.
Improved Bite Indication: While some think backleads dampen bites, pinning the line often provides a more “positive” take as the fish isn’t bumping into the line before picking up the bait.
Avoid Line Tangles: When fighting a fish, backleads keep your other lines pinned to the bottom, dramatically reducing the chance of a hooked fish swimming across and tangling your other rods.

Pressured Day Ticket Waters: On lakes where fish have seen it all, having your line pinned to the bottom can be the difference between a blank and a multi-fish session.
High-Bank Fishing: If your rods are set high on a bank, the angle of the line into the water is steep. A backlead is essential here to pull that line down onto the deck.
Boat Traffic & Waterfowl: If you are fishing a venue with boat traffic or lots of diving birds/swans, backleads keep your line deep and out of harm’s way.
Flat, Even Lake Beds: Backleads perform at their best on gravel, sand, or silt flats where the line can lay perfectly straight without being draped over underwater “hills” or plateaus.
The “Slack Line” Secret:
For the most effective concealment, don’t fish with a bow-string tight line when using backleads. After you’ve cast out and clipped the backlead on, let it slide down until it hits the bottom. Then, instead of tightening right up, leave a small amount of slack in the line. This allows the line to follow the contours of the lake bed perfectly. If you pull it too tight, you can actually create a “tripwire” effect where the line lifted off the bottom between the backlead and the rig!
Will these slide over knots?
The “Super-Slick” clip is designed with a generous internal diameter, but like all backleads, they can struggle to pass over large leader knots. For the best results, use them on a clear mainline or with very neat, low-profile leader joins.
When should I NOT use a backlead?
Avoid using backleads if the lake bed is extremely uneven or covered in “big” obstacles like large boulders or thick branches. If the line is pinned down behind a large rock, it can make bite indication difficult and increase the risk of the line fraying on the obstacle.
Do they come off during the fight?
They are designed to stay on the line during a standard fight. However, if the lead itself gets wedged in a snag or thick weed, the clip is designed to pull apart, releasing the weight and allowing you to continue the fight without being “anchored” to the bottom.
Which weight should I choose?
The 0.5oz is perfect for shorter ranges and subtle pinning. The 1oz and 1.5oz versions are better for longer distances or in venues with a slight tow (underwater current) that might move a lighter lead.
