When you’re moving into the 50-80lb class, you’ve officially left “casual fishing” behind and entered the world of big-game mechanics. Here at Gerry’s Fishing, we see the PENN Ally II 50-80lb Bent Butt as the workhorse for the serious offshore angler. It’s built for those who need a rod that can take the initial, violent surge of a massive shark or tuna and then provide the mechanical leverage required to bring that fish to the gunwale without breaking your back.
The Ally II is engineered for pure durability. It features a tubular E-glass blank topped with a solid glass tip. While carbon rods are great for sensitivity, E-glass is the king of offshore fishing because it can handle extreme angles and high-impact shocks that would shatter a higher-modulus rod. The solid tip ensures that even if a fish dives under the boat at the last second, the rod remains in one piece.
The Bent Butt design is a specialist’s choice. By angling the butt section, the rod sits lower in the holder, keeping the line angle shallow and significantly increasing your leverage over the fish. This model is fitted with a combination of Seaguide® Stainless Steel guides and PacBay® machined aluminum roller guides. These rollers are critical in the 50-80lb class; they dissipate the immense heat generated by long runs, protecting your line from melting or fraying under tension.
Prime Locations & Uses:
UK Bluefin Tuna: A top-tier choice for the UK’s world-class catch-and-release tuna fishery.
Heavy Sharking: Perfectly balanced for targeting large Porbeagle, Mako, and Blue sharks in deep Atlantic waters.
Big Game Trolling: Ideal for pulling large lures for Marlin, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna in tropical climates.
Deep-Sea Bait Fishing: The 50-80lb rating provides the “grunt” needed to winch up massive common skate or large conger eels from the deepest wrecks.
“The 50-80lb Bent Butt is the ‘sweet spot’ for most heavy offshore work in 2026. It’s beefy enough to stop a train, but it still has enough ‘give’ in that solid tip to prevent hook pulls. My advice? Pair this with a 30W or 50W size reel. Because it has PacBay rollers, make sure you give them a spin by hand before every trip. If they’re gritty from salt, a quick flush with fresh water and a drop of light oil will keep them rolling—and your line intact—when that 400lb tuna decides to head for the horizon!”

Q: Why a “Bent Butt” instead of a straight one?
A: Leverage. A bent butt allows the rod to sit lower in a fighting chair or rod holder. This changes the fulcrum point, making it easier for the angler to apply pressure to the fish while using their legs and back rather than just their arms. It also keeps the line further away from the boat’s hull.
Q: Can I use this rod for stand-up fishing?
A: You can, but it requires a specialized low-profile gimbal belt to accommodate the angle of the bent butt. If you prefer traditional stand-up fishing where you hold the rod throughout the fight, you might find the “Straight Butt” version of the Ally II more natural.
Q: Is it difficult to transport?
A: While the blank is a single piece, the PacBay aluminum butt is removable. This allows the rod to break down into two sections, making it much easier to fit into a standard rod tube for travel compared to a true one-piece 6ft rod.
Q: How do I maintain the roller guides?
A: After every trip, rinse the guides thoroughly with fresh water. Check that every roller spins freely. If a roller is stuck, it will create friction that can snap your line during a fast run. A tiny drop of marine-grade lubricant on the roller axles every few trips is all it takes to keep them in top shape.
