At Gerry’s Fishing, we’ve seen the “Red Rod” family grow over the years, but the 2023 Tenryu Injection SP 78 H marks a specific evolution for the modern boat and kayak angler. While many rods in the Injection range are celebrated for their shore-casting prowess, the 78 H is a precision-engineered beast designed specifically for the vertical game. If you spend your time hovering over deep-water wrecks, reef ledges, or tidal races, this rod provides the perfect balance of a forgiving tip and a “winch-like” butt section.
Measuring 2.34m (7’ 8”) with a heavy-duty 15-60g rating, this rod is built to handle the high-torque demands of working heavy jig heads and metal lures in deep water. The magic of the 2023 model lies in its progressive action. Unlike older “heavy” rods that felt like broomsticks, the SP 78 H features a noticeably soft tip. This softness ensures you can feel the lure’s vibration perfectly and prevents the fish from feeling too much resistance on the initial take, while the massive power reserve in the butt section allows you to “bully” specimen fish up from the depths before they can find a snag.
Vertical fishing is notoriously fatiguing on the wrists and arms, but Tenryu has optimized this blank for all-day comfort. The progressive load means the rod does the heavy lifting for you. Whether you are “shadding” for monster Pollack or “slow jigging” for Bass, the 78 H remains responsive and crisp. It is a rod that gives you the confidence to drop a 50g jig into a 100ft hole, knowing that you have the tactile feedback to detect a subtle “tick” on the drop and the raw power to set the hook instantly.

Deep Water Shadding: The ultimate tool for working large paddletails on 30g-50g heads over offshore wrecks for specimen Pollack and Coalfish.
Vertical Bass Fishing: Ideal for “bouncing” soft plastics or metal jigs over reef edges and sandbanks where Bass are holding in the tide.
Light Boat Jigging: Perfect for using small to medium metal jigs (up to 60g) for species like Cod, Gurnard, or even light-tackle Ray fishing.
Heavy Estuary Channels: Use the rod’s power to manage heavy lures in deep, fast-moving estuary “pots” where standard lure rods would simply fold under the current.
“The SP 78 H is labeled as a ‘vertical’ specialist, but don’t be afraid to use it for short-range casting from the boat too. Because of that soft tip, it excels at ‘pitching’ lures toward bridge pilings or rocky shorelines. My top setup advice? Pair this with a 4000 or 5000 size reel and a high-quality 1.5 or 2.0 PE braid. The extra power reserve in this rod means you can afford to use a slightly heavier leader (20lb-30lb) to protect against wreck-rub, and the rod’s action will still protect your knots during a violent lunge!”
Can I use this rod from the shore?
While you can cast with it, its 7′ 8″ length and vertical-optimized action mean it won’t be a distance machine. It’s primarily designed for boat, kayak, or pier fishing where you are working lures more vertically or at shorter ranges. For a dedicated shore-casting rod in this power bracket, look at the SP 86 XH.
How does the ‘soft tip’ help with vertical fishing?
In vertical fishing, a stiff tip often results in ‘bouncing’ the lure too aggressively, which looks unnatural to fish. The soft tip of the SP 78 H acts as a buffer, allowing the lure to move more fluidly. It also helps with bite detection, as you’ll see the tip ‘load’ slightly before you feel the hit through the blank.
Is it suitable for freshwater?
Absolutely. It’s an incredible rod for vertical jigging for large Zander or “pelagic” sharpshooting for monster Pike on deep reservoirs. The power reserve is more than enough to set big stinger hooks into the hard jaws of a specimen predator.
What makes the 2023 version better?
Tenryu has refined the carbon layup to make the rod even lighter without sacrificing power. The balance point has been adjusted to sit perfectly at the reel seat, making it feel much more nimble in the hand than previous heavy-action boat rods.
